Springer Quality and User Experience:

Topical Collection on “Towards an Integrated View on QoE and UX”

Overview

In the past years, the areas of Quality of Experience (QoE) and User Experience (UX) have evolved mostly separately. Research on QoE has frequently been limited to networked multimedia applications, such as the transmission of speech, audio and video signals. In parallel, UX research has historically evolved from usability research (which was focusing on enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of human-computer interaction), and was initially concerned with the prevention of negative emotions related to technology use. As a result, and in contrast to most QoE research, UX focuses on the understanding of human-machine interaction(s) as a specific emotional experience (e.g., hedonic pleasure) and considers pragmatic merely as enablers of positive experiences.

This topical collection of papers, which is based on papers and discussions from the 11th International Conference on Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX 2019) held in Berlin, Germany, June 5-7 2019, aims at bringing together different views on QoE and UX. Papers are expected to present and discuss current and future research on multimedia quality, Quality of Experience (QoE) and User Experience (UX), beyond the current borderlines between the two communities. This way, the topical collection will contribute to an integrated view on QoE and UX, and foster the exchange between the so-far distinct communities.

Articles of the topical collection may be entirely new submissions or extended versions of papers presented at QoMEX 2019, with a substantial (min 40%) increase in the presented scientific material, results, and discussions. Articles will be published online upon final acceptance and included in the yearly appearing printed volume of the QUX journal under the umbrella of the topical collection “Towards an Integrated View on QoE and UX”.
